My resolution for the New Year (although I am prone to failing at these things….) is to really take notice. There is so much small wonder in the world that we overlook in our quest for the “big.”
Our “big” break.
The “big” picture.
Go “big” or go home.
The next “big” thing just around the corner.
Here is what I have learned about the corner. The one the next “big” thing is around.
That corner is blind.
There is no way to see what is around it until you step around the sharp edges, the ninety degree angle, and find yourself in nirvana or flattened by a bus.
The thing about blind corners is you have to have faith.
You have to trust that the world exists on the other side of it.
We should go. Go boldly and with confidence, around the corner; fingers reading braille in the texture of the brick.
We should round the corner, not break stride, trust the ground to rise up and meet us on the other side.
And it might be big.
Whatever is on the other side. Whatever is around that corner.
It might be big and general and vague and impersonal as “big” things are prone to be. And we will be small to this “big” thing. We will be the ground rising up to meet it as it rounds a corner of its own on its way to something “bigger” and better than us.
Here is something else I have learned: A house can be “big” but a home is small. It is all the little things, all of the small details. The way the light filters into a room inviting you in. The thump of a tail against hardwood celebrating your return from the mailbox. It is the husband who pours the wine without being asked and notices you are low on bubble bath and orders you more. I have discovered that I don’t want to go “big” I just want to go home.
