Paint Party

Exciting things are happening!

At long, long, long last I have finally decided (I think) on paint colors for three of our rooms; the kitchen, the guest room which is going to be the master bedroom, and what should probably be a dining room but is going to be a bar/music/game/relax room.

I have been struggling with commitment to color since we moved in. I knew what colors I felt drawn to in each room, but the devil is in the details and he has kept me quite upended month after month with shades and hues and saturation points. With daylight and candlelight and every light in between.

To add to the confusion, it is not so much a color but a mood and story I am going for in each room, which is hard to choose from paint chips and harder still to convey at the paint counter at Home Depot. “Yes….I am looking for a yellow the color of Cuban cigar smoke, pipe tobacco, old book pages weathered and worn, vintage radio bulbs, Moroccan fairs, cumin and saffron mixed in equal parts, the hum of gorilla warfare, Hemingway at three a.m. sparring with bulls and himself, on the cusp of brilliance and despair.” Unfortunately, there are some things the “color match” machine just can not match.

And to be honest, I think I have been afraid to get it wrong. To choose the wrong color. To have the wrong ending. To tell the wrong story.

Reality never living up to the image in my head. Imagined perfection preferred to real life disappointment.

I am feeling buoyed however by the success of our blue room/library. I feel we got that color pretty close to the vision in my head.

I feel it can be done.

So we are doing it.

My husband is on furlough this week and we have decided to take advantage of this time and try and get these rooms done.

There will be reggae, classic rock, blues, jazz and heavy metal on the radio.

He will do the trim work and I will work the roller. He will be patient and I will get frustrated. He will take a breath and I will cuss.

In the end, each room will tell a story and the story will be ours.
