Don’t Look Down

The sky has been filled with young squirrels recently.

Clumsily clamoring through the tree tops and skittering across roofs and eaves, they struggle to find their footing, their balance, their nerve.

The key, they are learning, is not to look down.

So they ignore me as I gasp, sure the waver of the wire coupled with first tentative steps is not going to end well.

They tune out dogs worked up in a frenzy, upset that something without wings could dare to aim so high.

They take a moment, steady themselves, focus straight ahead and run to the other side without a backward or downward glance.
