One Year (and a few weeks…) Later

I knew we were getting close. I am not good with dates and anniversaries and numbers in general, but could sense the times lining up. The slant of sunlight coming in through the shutters in the morning, the weight and density of the humid air. The increased buzzing of insects, the frequency of mid day thunderstorms. All a reminder that we have been here before. Occupied this same square on the calendar, lived these languid summer days once already. A year (and a few weeks) ago, we finally made it to Georgia. To Brunswick. To the Narwhal. To our new … Continue reading One Year (and a few weeks…) Later

Grow Free

While we have been busy, sanding this and staining that, looking here instead of there, taming man made wildness to fit our man made ideals, distracted inside and not looking out, nature has been doing what she does best; growing despite the lull we wish she would fall into, the breather we wish she would allow us, the pause we wish she would take. Nature taunts us as we recline on the front porch, toasting to all we have accomplished this past week. She shows us how tall she has grown while remaining unchecked, the bounds she has made in … Continue reading Grow Free

The Showdown

It’s High Noon in the laundry room and the sunspot is not big enough for the both of them. She sidles in with her eye on the prize, while he, back against the wall, prepares to defend what he feels is rightfully his. By the time the dust settles, the sun will have moved along on its course, leaving only shade for both of them. And more than enough to share…… Continue reading The Showdown

Piddle Me This….

I was sitting at the world’s longest red light this afternoon, when I noticed something new where something old had been. Piddlers Antique Market, a fixture in town for a long time ( I had been told,) closed shop a few months ago. The building has been sitting empty, although I read in the paper that a Farmer’s Market would be taking up residence there at some point. Looks like “some point” is almost here. I was daydreaming about walking the few short blocks to the “Market” to pick up fresh produce when the light (finally) turned green. As I … Continue reading Piddle Me This….

Shocking

Most of the floors have finally been finished and we are slowly working on putting rooms together. First up is the room we have decided to make into the Master Bedroom. After much deliberation (because some decisions are just not easy for me) we ordered a rug for under the bed, picked up some simple curtains and a new light fixture. My husband was shocked when I knew exactly the light I wanted for the room and did not waver once in my decision. It was a sweet little chandelier from Lowe’s. I knew I wanted a chandelier for that … Continue reading Shocking

Raise the Bar

I was annoyed this morning when, while leaving the grocery store, I witnessed a young man discard his shopping cart into….the handicapped space across from him. “Really?!?” I grumbled just loud enough for him to hear as I snatched his cart and took it (along with mine) to the “corral” a few spaces down. I wondered about this interaction well into the afternoon. Wondered why he could not have taken the simple step himself to do the right thing. Wondered if I expect too much of people. Wondered how low I would have to set the bar in order to … Continue reading Raise the Bar

Well, That Didn’t Take Long…..

School started back at the Glynn Academy High School across the street from us last Thursday. Today, Monday, I came home from running errands to find a news crew from Jacksonville set up on the corner. Being the inquisitive (nosy) type, I of course wandered over to get the scoop. Seems they were there to do a story on the 37 kids who were now in quarantine after a positive COVID exposure….. Heavy Sigh. My husband and I had a discussion over dinner the night the kids came back. I reiterated how thankful I am that our son is grown … Continue reading Well, That Didn’t Take Long…..

At Last….

We (and by “we” I mean my husband who has worked tirelessly on this project) are at last done with sanding and done (thank goodness) with porch paint on all of our upstairs floors. There is still staining and sealing left to do, but for now we (and by “we” I mean both of us) are toasting to being one giant step closer to “done” with this particular project. Knock on Wood….. Symphony of Sounds

Just a short video tonight (because I figured out how to use the feature on my blog.) So…..get ready for lots of videos. I took a drive earlier in the week just to get out of the house, and came across this beautiful old cemetery. It started to thunder and rain as I was wandering about taking pictures. I hung out for a few minutes under the cover of a Magnolia tree and did my best to capture the symphony of sounds that surrounded me. It truly was magical….. I hope it translates and I hope you enjoy. Continue reading Symphony of Sounds
