School Days

School was back in session today at the high school across the street. I tossed and turned most of the night, checking my phone clock at various hours as if I would be the one attending class. After a five month absence, I had grown used to the relative quite. The lack of cars and music and shrieking and giggling that accompanied the arrival of students in the morning and announced their departure in the afternoon. The ordered chaos brought a cadence to my day and I have felt slightly off balance without it. The students arrived this morning with … Continue reading School Days

Flowers From The Weeds

A small flash of red in a pile of green. This little bud found itself wondering how it ended up in the “yard debris” pile awaiting pick up. The church behind our house owns a small lot down the street and has turned it into a beautiful garden. They grow a variety of vegetables that are given to the homeless shelter, and always have different plants and flowers in one stage of bloom or another. Volunteers buzz around almost daily, women in oversized sun hats, children with garden boots, pruning this and tilling that. Working slowly with skill and precision. … Continue reading Flowers From The Weeds

Nineteen Years

It is a moment freeze framed in time. A snapshot taken by a friend that surpassed all of the professional pictures and became my favorite touchstone of our special day. It is the moment I told him “We’re Married!” and he replied “Yeah!” and squeezed my hand just a little bit tighter as we awkwardly made our way across the dance floor. We have been tested over the years. Failed some. Passed most. We are still learning the rules. Still finding our way. Still learning the steps. Occasionally we dance, still awkwardly, across the kitchen floor. I remind him that … Continue reading Nineteen Years

Giant Jenga

Today we played, yet again, “Giant Jenga.” Taking apart furniture, moving it from room to room. Piling it here, stacking it there. Holding our breath. Hoping the tower would hold. We have polyurethane curing in two of the rooms, and sanding and staining in progress in the others. It has been a juggling act to keep it all moving and we have way too many pins in the air. At the end of the day we were able to see amazing progress and although we have to tiptoe carefully around it, the Jenga tower is holding steady. For now….. Continue reading Giant Jenga

Sudden Summer Storm

I was in the store for all of fifteen minutes. I ran in to get some picture wire and that was all the time it took for nature to change the scene and hang a different picture herself. Blue skies changed to gray. Still air to gusts of wind. Calm to electric. Silence to booms. I stood bewildered for a moment, wondered if I had shopped longer than I realized. Timed the flashes of light.Ran for my car. Closed the door. Narrowly beat the rain. Continue reading Sudden Summer Storm

It’s a Gas

It’s all fun and games until someone ruptures a gas line. The work crew was busy digging early this morning. Fiber optic cable installation for the phone lines I was told later. Something to do with the sewer (judging from the smell) I incorrectly assumed as we stepped out to walk the dogs. We made it down the street before the fire truck arrived. By the time we circled the block, the police were not letting anyone through. We sat in the shade with the dogs and hoped the house (cats still inside) wasn’t about to blow. It was not … Continue reading It’s a Gas
