Dog Mama Day

This was literally my day. The little guy was not feeling well and only stopped whining if held. So hold him I did. Even though I had a million other things to do . Even though I felt stuck and anxious and trapped in a chair. Even though it brought me back to sitting bedside with my mom. My heart pounding with every whimper and wince. I took a breath and willed myself to be patient. Willed my nerves to calm and my mind to clear. Reassured myself that everything that needs doing will still be there tomorrow. Remembered that … Continue reading Dog Mama Day

Drama, Drama, Drama

Update: Remember weeks ago when we were painting our front parlor? It was a neutral tannish/cream color and I wanted something…..with a little more flair. Much to my husband’s chagrin I chose….red. I mention his chagrin because in our last house we had a red accent wall in every room. And in every room we cursed red and vowed to never, ever, ever use it again. Red is a defiant color. It plays by its own rules. It separates easily. Dries at its own speed. Has a love/hate relationship with light and shadow. And….is the color I love most when … Continue reading Drama, Drama, Drama

Sour Grapes

Today is First Friday. And we are staying home. It is a strange time/world we are living in. Our area is becoming a hot spot yet life continues on, seemingly oblivious in many regards. I grumbled about for most of the afternoon, lamenting my inability to participate in the festivities. My husband and I sharing the mindset that it is just not the responsible thing to do. I am stopped mid grumble by a darkening sky not in the forecast.A sudden storm with no sign of letting up. Lightning flashes, thunder crashes and I question my ability to control the … Continue reading Sour Grapes

Mama Said There’d Be Days Like This…..

Some days you wake up with the world at your feet. Then life steps in and puts you in a cone. The lesson is to take nothing for granted. Don’t get too cocky. Try to remain positive. Allow others to care for you. Remember that as big as you think you are….life is bigger. Always keep your sense of humor. ***Dobby is fine but experienced an embarrassing incident with his backside. He requests I do not go into detail but rather motivate you all with his wisdom and lessons learned 😉 **** Continue reading Mama Said There’d Be Days Like This…..

Pay No Attention To The Man Behind The Curtain…..

The school across the street from us has been busily preparing for reopening. (That is a story for another time…..) Landscape crews have been out in full force. Mowing grass, trimming trees, planting flowers, arranging fresh mulch. And…..building a wall. We noticed something was different the other night but couldn’t quite put our finger on it. It finally came down to “Has that wall always been there?” A moment that had us both scrambling to remember and questioning our sanity. No. The wall was definitely new. We live on the backside, the storage side, the “business side,” of the school. … Continue reading Pay No Attention To The Man Behind The Curtain…..

Calm in the Storm

The anticipated storm passed with barely a nod in our direction. A bit of rain to mark its existence, and then on to other places. The Lanier bridge, which had been closed due to its elevation and expected winds, opened late this afternoon. Patio furniture, squirreled away for safekeeping, was brought out to front porches across town in time for an evening cocktail. Lawnmowers buzzed to life in the waning light as boats rocked gently in the harbor, gulls circling overhead. It is moments like this that I am reminded of where I am. Moments like this that I realize … Continue reading Calm in the Storm

Prelude

A man riding by on a bicycle, lets out a profanity and pedals faster as the sky unexpectedly opens up. People scramble off of benches at the park across the way, idle chit chat turns to shrieking, newspapers become makeshift hats as they run for cover. I see them from the doorway where I headed when I heard the wind pick up. I watch them hurry away as I throw the door open, meet the wind head on, eager to be right in the middle of it; this hint of danger, this flexing of muscles, this opening act with something … Continue reading Prelude
