Off Shoots

I came across this tree while out walking. Someone or something appears to have tried their best to stunt its growth, to thwart its attempt to embrace the clouds, cut back its arms as it reaches for the sky. The power company no doubt. Deeming its branches too close to the lines, lopped it back in an attempt to exert control. The tree it appears, has other ideas. From ever severed branch and complacent area, off shoots are being called forth, a Medusa head of regrowth forming an army on an upward assent, on a quest to reclaim the sun. Sunny Side Up

I am not the kind of person who normally photographs her food. Then again…..I am not the kind of person who usually has success in the kitchen. I have been working on perfecting my sunny side up eggs. A delicate balance between too runny and rubber. Today was one of those rare days when it looked like I got it right. So I snapped a picture. Right before I started walking to the table and they slid off of the plate and onto the floor. Perhaps the Universe was reminding me to walk more slowly; to take measured steps, to … Continue reading Sunny Side Up

Look Close…. Look Closer Still

Today while we were out walking, I paused at a house we see almost every day to admire the gate I never noticed. It’s funny how that works. How the details become part of the scenery, blended and blurred until they are absorbed into the bigger picture, hardly noticed, glossed over by the eye. As I leaned in close to take a photo, as I voiced these thoughts aloud, my husband urged me to look closer still so I would not miss the ladybug my eye was sweeping over. Please Stand By….

I have been wearing my “Shit Socks” recently. Metaphorically speaking. And I want to apologize. I made the commitment at the beginning of the year that I was going to blog each and every day. And I have. Which is a huge accomplishment for me. But…..I feel like I have hit the mid season slump. My vision of “reporting” from the beach, exploring local haunts and trying out new to me restaurants has been derailed and frankly, I am struggling to get back on track. My husband and I have been staying in, closed off, as our state opens up. … Continue reading Please Stand By….

Fits and Starts

It has been a week of fits and starts. Of things I want slash need to do and the overwhelming feeling that these things are so insignificant in the face of everything going on in the world that they lose merit and I lose momentum. I am left surrounded by half started projects, glued to the news. It feels like everything is at a stand still while simultaneously rushing forward, pushing back, rushing forward again. It is as if the ebb and flow of the ocean and the tide have broken free of the gravitational force, have discovered their unharnessed … Continue reading Fits and Starts

Duality

Parked neatly between the white lines, content to wade in a shallow pool, dodging shoppers and carts and cars. Skimming the oil stained surface for scraps washed from the gutter by the rain, cookie crumbs tossed by shrieking children, day old sticky buns from the nearby dumpster. His image distorted by the ripples of false contentment until he no longer recognizes himself as the wild thing he is. No longer remembers that he is meant for better things. No longer remembers that the Winn Dixie parking lot is a poor substitution for the sea. No longer remembers that he has a … Continue reading Duality
