Thunderstruck

Today was a day of rain and wind and thunder and lightening. It was a day of neighbors taking cover and coming together. It was, I suppose, a typical day in a small southern town. The weather report called for rain, damaging winds, hail and possible tornadoes. We moved the potted plants inside early this morning. Fetched lawn furniture and secured it in the out building. Scooped leaves out of the storm drain. Moved the remaining car off of the street, where it would be an easy target for hail, and onto the driveway, under the tree we hoped would … Continue reading Thunderstruck

The Sunny Side Of The Street

We came to a point this morning, while walking the dogs, where we had to make a decision. Our little guy is a big trouble maker who does not like other dogs. So when we saw a woman, Labrador in tow, nearing the corner we were planning to turn down, we had to decide what to do. Keep going and hope for the best. Scoop the little one up and “fast walk” past her. Or cross to the other side of the street. The woman looked to be struggling a bit with her dog so we decided mid stride to … Continue reading The Sunny Side Of The Street

Do What You Can

One of the children in our neighborhood has used her “down time” to research the “pet of her dreams.” She has searched her heart, studied the reference books and decided on…..a chinchilla. In order to finance her new pet, she baked dog treats and was selling them locally. Advertised on Facebook, Payed via Venmo. Delivered to your porch. No fuss. No muss. We, of course, bought a bag. Did we need them? No. Did she need us to need them? Yes. So we bought them, because fostering connection and unity in this time of uncertainty is worth more than the … Continue reading Do What You Can

#Planet Brunswick

I was recently invited to join the local online neighborhood watch group. It is a group of locals who share the daily police reports for the area and advise of any questionable activity they may have noticed. It was in this group that I discovered a little gem called #planetbrunswick. This is the label that gets thrown on all of the weird things that happen in town that you just can’t make up. I thought I would start a category on this blog and share with you these occurrences that give the SoGlo (South of Gloucester Street) area of Brunswick … Continue reading #Planet Brunswick

Deja Vu

Today was a most uninteresting day until I made a most interesting discovery. Both of my dogs came down sick today (I think they drank rainwater which has upset their stomachs.) So my day consisted of boiling white rice and chicken, preparing pumpkin purée and a million trips outside to the one spot in the yard where we didn’t just lay grass seed. Keeping an eye on them all day to keep “accidents” from happening led to a lot of time scrolling around online which is where I found my most interesting thing. A woman in my “Old House” group … Continue reading Deja Vu

Ooey Gooey

Yesterday marked the 20 year anniversary of our first official date. I only remember (and yesterday I forgot…) because it was tax day (April 15th) and my friend was having a party. At that age you look for any excuse to celebrate, so tax day it was. I had made arrangements to carpool to the party with a friend. I asked her to drive and that way I could “test” the adorable and brilliant boy with the twisted sense of humor I had snuck onto the guest list. My thought was, at some point my friend would have to head … Continue reading Ooey Gooey

Breaking Bread

Sheltering in place has had us pacing the floors and climbing the walls. Snapping and snarling and glaring at each other from the corner of our eyes. Huffing and eye rolling has become a form of communication. And everything is annoying. I left the back door unlocked. He left a towel in the dryer. The dog pooped on the floor. Between work stress, stress over the economy, stress over the health of family and friends (many of whom work in the medical field,) stress over the general uncertainty of things, it has all gotten to be a lot recently. But…..tonight … Continue reading Breaking Bread
