Ain’t No Sunshine…..

It’s Friday. It’s been a week. Let’s keep it short and simple tonight. The Thing I Am Loving RIGHT now is something I have loved since the first time I heard it years and years and years ago. It is the one song I look for on any jukebox I come across and the only song I ever offer up if a singer, band, or friend with a guitar asks for a request. They all know it. They all nod in support of my choice. They all oblige. They all realize …that they are out of their league. They all … Continue reading Ain’t No Sunshine…..

First Watch

He is a small dog with a big ego. She is a small cat with big plans. He is a mama’s boy who doesn’t share. Not a cookie. Not a sun spot. Not one single resource. He keeps track of all that is “his.” He hoards rawhide chews under his blanket and stockpiles toys behind his pillow. He spends his days on edge, defending all that he has acquired and amassed. She is a gypsy. Nomadic. With nothing to her name. After years of living with us, she still belongs to no one. She is aloof and independent. She makes … Continue reading First Watch

Listen to Your Mother

We were under a tornado watch most of the afternoon. The sky was dark. The wind picked up and settled down and picked up again. The rain fell and fell and fell some more. And the people, who want so badly to get out, were happy to stay inside. They were happy to listen to Mother Nature when she ushered them in. They were happy to close the door firmly and lock it behind them. They were happy to obey her stern warning and busy themselves with household tasks, pausing to listen to the wind while closing the shutters tight. … Continue reading Listen to Your Mother

We Go Out Walking…..

Cabin Fever sets in about 4:30 pm. Even though we are, by nature, homebodies we start pacing the floors, restless and unsettled once the sun hits a certain slant and the shadows grow long and lazy and drawn out. We’ll just go for a short walk. For the sake of our mental health. Around the block. Maybe just a bit farther because our mental health could use some help. We will stay six feet apart from others while holding hands. We will be a gathering of two. A private party. Very exclusive. Don’t be offended if you didn’t make the … Continue reading We Go Out Walking…..

The Zombie Apocalypse….Would Be Good For You And I……

Tonight I offer you this gift. My “friend” (meaning someone I met at a film festival but who could not pick me out of a lineup,) Travis Betz, wrote and directed this amazing film. He is offering it up for free to entertain folks locked up tight (much like the characters in this movie) and I thought I would share it here with you. My son and I went to see this particular film when it was screened near us in Phoenix years ago. My son (and I) love a good scare, throw in musical number (or two or three) … Continue reading The Zombie Apocalypse….Would Be Good For You And I……

Bloom

I noticed these buds in the side yard were on the verge of blossoming this morning. By midday they had started to open and by early evening, were in full bloom. It is a reminder of how quickly life goes by. How fleeting the moments, how much can change in the span of a few hours. These flowers woke with the sun and packed a lifetime into a single day. We should be so lucky. Continue reading Bloom

There’s No Place Like (a haunted) Home

This week has been all about “Sheltering in Place” and “Social Distancing” which has led to me seeking out small creature comforts. A cozy blanket, a good book, my favorite comfy pants, bubble bath. I have been washing windows and doing laundry. Mopping floors and organizing cabinets. I, and the whole world I suspect, are nesting. We are flitting around fluffing this and straightening that. We are resting in corners and peering out through door cracks. We are pregnant with expectation and waiting for the birth of a new world. It was in this cleaning of drawers and organizing of … Continue reading There’s No Place Like (a haunted) Home

Unplug and Smell the Roses

After my near panic attack the other day, I decided to take a step back and unplug from technology. If only for a day. I realize looking back, that I had spent most of that day clutching my phone, checking my email, social media, the news. Repeat, repeat, repeat. It was an attempt to stay informed, educated, in the loop, in control, but the more I learned the less I knew. And the more in control of things outside of my control I tried to be, the more frantic and desperate I became. What was real, what was hype, what … Continue reading Unplug and Smell the Roses
