Throwback Thursday

Part of the fun (for me) in owning an old house is exploring its link to the past. There is a sense of heritage, of lineage that one inherits when purchasing a piece of history. There is a humbling, a sense of duty, a fierce protection that one (hopefully) recognizes the moment the key is turned in the lock and the threshold is crossed for the very first time. There is a bargain that is struck between man (or woman) and house. “You keep me warm and dry and I will keep you standing until it is my time to … Continue reading Throwback Thursday

Breakfast for Dinner

Today was not the day I thought it was. I thought today was Shrove Tuesday, something I know little bout. The banner hanging from the Episcopalian church down the street says there will be pancakes for dinner and that is all I need to hear. I heat the griddle and whip up some batter, declaring that we too will be honoring this tradition. There is an art to making pancakes and it is all about the bubbles. I gauge them while my husband sets the table. I garnish the plates with seashells in an attempt to be fancy but remove … Continue reading Breakfast for Dinner

And the Oscar Goes To…..

Last night was the Academy Awards. As a movie huge movie buff with a cousin in the business, Oscar night has always been an exciting and special night for me. I vow every year that I am going to watch all of the films nominated for “Best Picture” and every year I fail. This year I only managed to squeeze in two: Parasite and Joker. JoJo Rabbit was next in line but I ran out of time and didn’t make it that far. As it turned out, I picked the right two to watch. Joker was amazing (love Joaquin Phoenix) … Continue reading And the Oscar Goes To…..

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

This morning I fired up the “Random Word Generator” and came up with the word “Abandoned.” My goal was to keep this word in the back of my mind and be on the look out for manifestations of it throughout the day. A scavenger hunt of sorts. I knew I would have no trouble finding at least one or two examples in the form of buildings if nothing else. My dog Herbie was the one to lay claim to the word first when, in the garden, he tried to make friends with a flying insect who soon left him alone … Continue reading Scavenger Hunt Sunday

A Tale of Two Towns

Just a quick check in tonight to share this video that the the local radio team put together and submitted to the open call for HGTV’s Hometown Takeover Show. They did an amazing job showing the two sides of our town. The parts that have been honored, maintained and restored and the parts that could use a little help. My husband and I (mostly I) wrestled with this dichotomy when making our decision to move. I loved the good but was uneasy about the bad. We drove down one street and I was ready to sign papers and move in, … Continue reading A Tale of Two Towns

Justice For All

This week’s “Thing I Am Loving RIGHT now” is a quote that was shared by Rabbi Rachael Bregman of Temple Beth Tefilloh at this month’s “Forward Brunswick” meeting. The meeting (our first) was opened by Rabbi Bregman sharing some thoughts about “the sacred” (more on this at a later time as it is still marinating in my brain.) She then moved on to share a quote by Aboriginal activist Lilla Watson which goes as follows: If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, … Continue reading Justice For All

Ducklings

To the mama walking ahead of us this morning: Ducklings. That is what first comes to mind when I spot you and your towhead brood a block ahead of us; three of them and only one of you, walking with order and purpose, navigating the uneven sidewalk. I realize quickly that these are not ducklings, following blindly one behind the other, behind the other, behind you. You are not leading them, you are walking WITH them. You are pointing out the trees and the moss and the flowers in the pots. You are walking side by side with your children. … Continue reading Ducklings

Cool Fool

Today started out as one of THOSE days. One of those days where everything just rubs you the wrong way and you are impatient and irritated for no real reason. I decided to go for a drive over the bridge and along the coast to readjust my attitude. I stopped for gas before heading out and then hit the road. I was gone about an hour and was annoyed for most of my drive. Other drivers were too slow, were in my way, just existed in the first place. You know the mood. I had my tunes on, the sunroof … Continue reading Cool Fool
